Advanced Micro Devices Inc. said Tuesday (Aug. 15) that it has completed the design, or tape-out, of its quad-core Opteron processors and that production introduction is scheduled for midyear 2007.
The quad-core is expected to be used in high-end computers such as workstations and servers.
AMD (Sunnyvale, Calif.) said that the quad-core Opteron processors are expected to be electrically, thermally and socket-compatible with dual core Opteron processors being launched now. The present devices and the quad-cores to come are expected to use a package that fits into a socket called Socket F (1207), AMD said.
