Apple recalls its Laptop Battery Pack

Friday, August 25, 2006 Apple Computer's woes continued with the company recalling 1.8 million Sony-based, rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs for a number of its iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 notebook computers.

The recall, reported in a release by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, involves 1.1 million battery packs sold inside the U.S., and 700,000 sold outside the U.S.

According to the notice, these lithium-ion batteries can overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers. Apple has received nine reports of batteries overheating, including two reports of minor burns from handling overheated computers and other reports of minor property damage. No serious injuries were reported.

The recalled lithium-ion batteries were used with Apple's 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4 laptops sold from Oct. 2003 through Aug. 2006. The packs were assembled in Japan, Taiwan, and China.

Apple has advised consumers to check its website to determine whether their batteries fall under the recall and request a replacement battery. However, a published website link was not yet active as of press time Thursday afternoon, and Apple has not returned calls for comment.

For Apple, the recall is another black mark for the Cupertino, Calif.-based computer maker.
