The agency said the Institute's R&D foundry, the first of its kind in the region, would help chip makers launch prototyping and low-volume production of next-generation products.

"With the success of a few companies that have used the facility for pilot runs, [the foundry] is now ready to take on more industry partners," the agency said.

The Institute also announced five new partners, including an alliance with Chartered Semiconductor for volume production of chips designed by the Institute and its research partners.

"We are seeing customers, especially those from the U.S., who require a R&D partner with manufacturing support from a commercial foundry," said Dim-Lee Kwong, the Institute's executive director.
