Samsung Electronics said it has begun shipping samples of its high-capacity NAND flash memory solution, trademarked moviNAND, to global mobile device manufacturers .
The company is shipping 1-Gbyte and 2-Gbyte moviNAND solutions— an embedded combination of NAND flash memory, a multimedia card (MMC) controller and on-board firmware.
According to Samsung, mass production of moviNAND parts starts later this month, with 512-Mbyte and 4-Gbyte densities also shipping by the year's end. Samsung said moviNAND flash memory satisfies architectural concerns of mobile device designers with its high speed, high capacity and a form factor smaller than competing devices. It takes advantage of the high-performance MMC interface to provide what Samsung claims is the fastest mobile data processing of 52 Mbytes per second.
As an embedded memory card, Samsung's moviNAND makes it unnecessary for mobile devices to have an external memory card slot, the company added. Another option is to use the embedded flash with a removable MMC card to produce higher storage capacity.
