Dell Inc. will set up a plant in a special economic zone in Sriperumbudur near Chennai in southern India's Tamil Nadu, where it will start building desktop computers the first half of next year.
Dell signed a memorandum of understanding to set up the plant with Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi. Dell will invest $60 million in the plant, which will employ over 1,000. Dell's suppliers are also likely to locate near the plant.
Computer makers HP and Lenovo already have India plants. Unlike its rivals who only assemble PCs in India, Dell said its new plant would be a full-fledged facility.
