There's good and bad news for NAND flash-memory vendors.
Good news: For the week ended Sept. 15, spot prices for NAND flash memories jumped for the third consecutive week. On average, NAND spot prices went up 8.7 percent during the week ended Sept. 15, compared to the previous week, standing at $2.40 on a 1-gigabit equivalent basis, according to Gartner Inc.
Bad news: Apple Computer Inc.'s recent iPod introductions were a disappointment, which, in turn, will impact the overall demand for the NAND flash-memory market in the fourth quarter of 2006, according to a report from Gartner.
More bad news: "Gartner Dataquest maintains its year-long position that the outlook for 2007 will be challenging, with NAND pricing down about 56 percent because of massive supply coming online, supported by healthy but maturing demand of 152 percent bit growth fueling modest revenue growth of 10 percent," according to the research firm.
