Hynix Semiconductor's plan to build a 12-inch fab in South Korea's Icheon, which has been rejected by the Korean government due to environmental concerns, will revive after laws are revised, according to company chairman Woo Eui-jei.
Woo claimed the Korean government is seeking to revise the laws, and the 12-inch fab project may be approved at the end of this year or at the beginning of 2007.
To date, the Korean government has rejected the plan because Icheon is a conservation zone, which under current laws means it is off-limits to factories.
Hynix and STMicroelectronics on Tuesday formally inaugurated a joint memory plant in Wuxi, China. Woo stressed the Wuxi plant was built in line with Hynix's global deployment, and had nothing to do with the Korean government's rejection of the Icheon project.
