IBM expands Taiwan R&D center to cover higher-end applications

Friday, October 20, 2006

IBM announced that it is expanding its Taiwan hardware R&D center to applications including BladeCenter blade servers, Power chips and RSS (retail store solutions).

The company also changed the name of the center from the System X Taiwan Development Center (xTDC), to the Taiwan Systems and Technology Laboratory (TSTL)

IBM established xTDC in July-August 2004 to focus on R&D of x86 servers. The center has invested about NT$5.0 billion in R&D and has a staff of more than 100 at present, with developed System X server models accounting for about 50% of IBM's global shipment volume of such products currently, according to IBM Taiwan president Sophia Tong. TSTL will now be expanded to include 400 members within three years.

For Power chip solutions, in addition to being used in servers, game consoles and IAs (information appliances) are other target applications, the company said. In addition to the development of the technologies, TSTL will provide IBM Lab-based services to support Taiwan makers in system integration, IBM Taiwan noted.
