The Korean government said a research team led by Samsung Electronics Co. has developed a high-resolution dual capacity display that allows 3-D images to be viewed on a flat- panel display without special filter glasses.
The new Samsung display, developed with the help of other local firms and research institutes, includes both 3D and regular 2D modes. The ministry said it expects the new display to be commercialized by 2009.
"Unlike conventional 3D displays, there is no loss of resolution on the newly-developed 3D display even if the panel's 2D mode is switched to the 3D mode," a Samsung spokeswoman said in confirming the ministry's announcement.
The ministry said the new 3D display will hit the market in 2009 when new demand for a wide range of IT-related applications such as online games, e-shopping and 3D Web content will be ready.
