Siemens invest in China 's R & D

Thursday, November 2, 2006 Siemens plans to hire an additional 100 engineers by 2008 and spend about $100 million over the next three to five years to boost the output of its R&D in China.

Siemens R&D operations in China are the largest it has in Asia Pacific. The expansion of activity will cover several areas, including interactive design techniques, software engineering, data networking, wireless access, and OLEDs.

Siemens said it is expanding its R&D in China because it want to be close to local production and local customers, as well as Chinese universities. It also hopes to forge ties with small and medium enterprises to improve development of products for the local market.

Siemens set up its first research center in Beijing in 1999 to focus on IP, standardization and regulations, and user interface design. In 2004, it set up an R&D center for application-oriented development in the fields of information and communication, industrial automation and intelligent automotives.
