Sony did not deliver all promised on PS3

Tuesday, November 21, 2006 Sony Corp. delivered fewer than half of the 400,000 PlayStation 3 units it planned to offer in the U.S, last weekend, according to an analyst.

Citing retail channel checks, Colin Sebastian, an analyst with Lazard Capital Markets LLC, told EE Times that Sony delivered between 150,000 and 200,000 PS3 units, and that it was "probably on the lower end of that scale."

Sony's initial drop of PS3 units, which hit stories Nov. 17, sold out in a matter of hours. The company had said it would deliver 400,000 units in the U.S., less than half of what it had originally pledged, prior to pushing out the rollout earlier this year.

Sebastian said Sony has not acknowledged the shortfall. It is unlikely, he said, that Sony will. "Launch day," of a new gaming console is important for generating buzz, he said, but not a litmus test for new console. The true next-generation gaming console wars will be fought next year, he said, after Sony overcomes the blue laser diode manufacturing problems that have plagued its launch.

"Launch day is just one day," Sebastian said, adding that Sony is trying to address its production issues.
