Gartner forecast Capex up to stay flat in 2007

Wednesday, December 20, 2006 Gartner Inc. predicted that capital equipment spending will be $56.6 billion in 2007, up only 1 percent compare to 2006, but it will rebound and grow by 16.1 percent to $65.7 billion in 2008.

Capital spending will see a decline of 8.3 percent ($60.2 billion) in 2009, a deficit of 2.6 percent ($58.7 billion) in 2010 and growth of 16.4 percent ($68.3 billion) in 2011, according to the firm.

Worldwide capital equipment spending is projected to grow 24.9 percent ($42.4 billion) in 2006, but the industry will soften in 2007 as spending declines 0.7 percent ($42.1 billion), according to Gartner. The industry will see 20.8 percent growth in 2008, followed by minus 12.8 percent in 2009, plus 2.7 percent in 2010, and positive 16.3 percent in 2011, according to the firm.

''The upward adjustment [in the capital spending forecast] is small and largely to the fact that the quarterlies moved upward in the 2H 2006, pushing 2007 up,'' said Klaus Rinnen, an analyst with Gartner/Dataquest. ''It is clear that our forecast retained a cautious tone despite a slightly better annual growth rate.''
