TI can get 100,000:1 contrast on your TV

Thursday, January 18, 2007

Texas Instruments has adopted solid state lighting sources for its latest digital light processing (DLP) flat-panel display technology.

“LEDs can switch very fast, and DLP mirrors switch very fast, it allows us to expand the color gamut and get higher image quality,” John Reder, manager for DLP TV worldwide strategy and business development at TI told Electronics Weekly. “We have a DLP TV with a 100,000:1 contrast ratio.”

Samsung was the first to ship an LED-based DLP TV in the middle of last year, and is planning others.

At the high-definition resolution standard of 1080p, TI had the highest market share last year. Plasma has not followed.

“In plasma, they’ve been slow out of the gate,” said Reder. “The talk in the industry is that 1080p is a very significant challenge for plasma. As you go to higher resolution, the cell walls take up a higher proportion of the picture, and they find it difficult to change the width of the cell walls. As the pixel gets smaller it diminishes the brightness.”

TI is also seeing business in digital cinema. Some 3,000 have been installed worldwide, including 50 in the U.K. The opportunity for TI comes about because DLP technology allows an almost infinite screen size using front projection.
