Mobile phone giant Motorola Inc. has inked an agreement with Indian telecom company Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) for the supply of a Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) cellular network for Delhi and India's National Capital Region.
Under the agreement, which includes network deployment and maintenance services, MTNL will be expanding its GSM network by 2 million lines. As the first UMTS rollout in India, Motorola said the UMTS network deployment won't take place until after India's regulatory authorities authorize spectrum allocation and appropriate licenses are obtained by the network operators.
Motorola said the network will be deployed in two phases, each covering approximately one million subscribers.
This is not Motorola's first foray in the subcontinent. The company is currently building a new $100 million dollar fab near Chennai that is set to be operational this year.
