AMD offers new Turion 64 for embedded system

Monday, January 29, 2007

AMD has added its Turion 64 X2 TL-52 and Mobile Sempron 3500+ processors to its AMD64 Longevity Program for embedded solutions, a scheme which gives embedded solution providers assurance that processors will be available for five years, bringing the company's embedded processor total to 12.

The Turion 64 X2 follows the growing trend for dual-core processors in the Industrial PC (IPC) sector, while the Sempron model will target entry- and mid-level markets, according to market sources. For IPC vendors, an increase in the variety of choice is good for market growth, the sources noted.

With the availability of the processors set to at least five years, IPC vendors, however, still face the issue of sourcing supporting chipsets from other makers. On January 25, AMD announced that it will produce own-brand chipsets in the near future, the sources revealed.

In additional news, the recent acquisition of ATI has led the market to predict ATI will be focusing on providing chipsets to support AMD processors at the high-end, leaving the way clear for Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) and other makers to focus on providing entry- and mid-level solutions. This setup will put AMD in a better position, according to market sources
