Data Evolution Holdings Inc. (DEC) has completed the acquisition of Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s Personal Internet Communicator (PIC) device technology assets.
Last year, AMD dropped its line of low-cost PCs that were geared for developing nations, according to a filing by the company. AMD (Sunnyvale, Calif.) dropped the PIC, a device that cost $249 for the computer and a 15-inch monitor.
''This is an exciting acquisition for DEC,'' said Robert Sowah, DEC's chief executive, in a statement. ''We are aggressively pursuing our thin client strategy, part of which calls for expansion into high-growth markets. Adding the PIC product design to our portfolio of products is a significant step in that direction.''
Combined with the company's existing line of mobile computer offerings, the addition of the PIC product design, which is a low-cost, low-power desktop computer, makes DEC (New Orleans, Louisiana) a bigger supplier of thin client products.
