Flash Memory Card 2005

Thursday, June 9, 2005
Flash memory is a form of EEPROM that allows multiple memory locations to be erased or written in one programming operation. In lay terms, it is a form of rewritable memory chip that, unlike a Random Access Memory chip, holds its content without maintaining a power supply.

Normal EEPROM only allows one location at a time to be erased or written, meaning that flash memory can operate at higher effective speeds when the system uses it to read and write to different locations at the same time. All types of flash memory and EEPROM wear out after a certain number of erase operations, due to wear on the insulating oxide layer around the charge storage mechanism used to store data.

Flash memory is non-volatile, which means that it stores information on a silicon chip in a way that does not need power to maintain the information in the chip. In addition, flash memory offers fast read access times and solid-state shock resistance. These characteristics explain the popularity of flash memory for applications such as storage on battery-powered devices like mobile phones and personal digital assistants.

Flash memory is based on the Floating-Gate Avalanche-Injection Metal Oxide Semiconductor (FAMOS transistor) which is essentially an NMOS transistor with an additional conductor suspended between the gate and source/drain terminals.Flash memory is made in two forms: NOR flash and NAND flash. The names refer to the type of logic gate used in each storage cell. Flash memory is often used in MP3 players, digital cameras and mobile phones.

50-pin CompactFlash™ Type I Memory Card

A CompactFlash Type I memory card is a solid-state disk card with a 50-pin connector. The pins provide a connection between the memory and the CompactFlash drive in your electronic device. CompactFlash cards are used more like a hard drive than RAM. They are designed with flash technology, a non-volatile storage solution that does not lose its information when power is removed from the card. The cards contain no moving parts and are extremely rugged, providing much greater data protection than conventional magnetic disk drives.

CompactFlash cards are commonly used in portable applications such as digital cameras, digital music players, and personal digital assistants (PDAs).

When buying CompactFlash, be sure it is the type of memory card your device takes—most cameras and other devices can accept only one type of card (MultiMediaCard™, CompactFlash card, or Secure Digital™ card). CompactFlash Type I cards can be used in a CompactFlash Type II slot. CompactFlash Type II cards cannot be used in Type I slots. CompactFlash Type I cards can also be used in Type III PCMCIA slots with an optional adapter or with card readers that connect to USB ports and serial ports.

CompactFlash Type I cards weigh just a half-ounce and are about the size of a matchbook: 1.6 inches long, 1.4 inches high, and 0.13 inches thick (40.6 mm by 35.6 mm by 3.3 mm).

Secure Digital Card

Secure Digital cards are solid-state devices designed with flash technology, a non-volatile storage solution that does not lose its information when power is removed from the card. The cards contain no moving parts and are extremely rugged, providing much greater data protection than conventional magnetic disk drives.

The SD card's nimble, portable data transfer and low battery consumption makes it ideal for high-speed digital cameras, camcorders, MP3s, cell phones, PDAs, and global positioning systems. Interface options include an SD interface or a serial peripheral interface.

SD cards measure 0.95 inches wide, 1.26 inches high, and 0.08 inches thick (24 mm by 32 mm by 2.1 mm).

High-Speed Secure Digital Cards

High-Speed Secure Digital cards are solid-state devices designed with flash technology, a non-volatile storage solution that does not lose its information when power is removed from the card. The cards contain no moving parts and are extremely rugged, providing much greater data protection than conventional magnetic disk drives.

The high-speed SD card's nimble, portable data transfer makes it ideal for high-speed digital cameras, camcorders, MP3s, cell phones, PDAs, and global positioning systems. Interface options include an SD interface or a serial peripheral interface.

High-Speed SD cards measure 0.95 inches wide, 1.26 inches high, and 0.08 inches thick (24 mm by 32 mm by 2.1 mm).

MiniSD

miniSD (Secure Digital™) Card are solid-state devices designed with flash technology, a non-volatile storage solution that does not lose its information when power is removed from the card. The cards contain no moving parts and are extremely rugged, providing much greater data protection than conventional magnetic disk drives.

Like regular SD cards, the miniSD card's nimble, portable data transfer makes it ideal for portable electronic devices. The miniSD's smaller size (it is about 40 percent of the size of a regular SD card) is designed for use in newer mobile phones, which have memory-hungry features such as built-in digital cameras, music download capability, and games.

However, the card uses an adapter that converts the miniSD card into a regular-sized SD card so that the card can be used with other SD-compatible devices, such as digital cameras, MP3 players, and handheld computers. The adapter is also great for using your miniSD card in card readers that accept SD cards but not miniSD cards.Crucial miniSD (Secure Digital)

MiniSD cards measure 0.8465 inches wide, 0.7874 inches high, and 0.05512 inches thick (21.5 mm by 20 mm by 1.4 mm).

MultiMediaCards™

A MultiMediaCard is a solid-state disk card with a 7-pin connector. The pins provide a connection between the memory and your electronic device. MultiMediaCards are used more like a hard drive than RAM. They are designed with flash technology, a non-volatile storage solution that does not lose its information when power is removed from the card. The cards contain no moving parts and are extremely rugged, providing much greater data protection than conventional magnetic disk drives.

MultiMediaCards are commonly used in portable devices such as digital cameras, digital music players, and personal digital assistants (PDAs). When buying MultiMediaCards, be sure it is the type of memory card your device uses—most cameras and other devices can accept only one type of card (MultiMediaCard™, CompactFlash card, or Secure Digital™ card).

MultiMediaCards weigh just 2 grams and are about the size of a postage stamp: 1.26 inches long, 0.94 inches high, and 0.06 inches thick (32 mm by 24 mm by 1.4 mm).

Memory Stick®

The Memory Stick is a digital film card designed with flash technology, a non-volatile storage solution that does not lose its information when power is removed from the card. The solid-state cards contain no moving parts and are extremely rugged, providing much greater data protection than conventional magnetic disk drives.

Memory Stick is about the size of a stick of gum and comes in a 128MB capacity. Memory Sticks can be used in an array of applications, including video cameras, audio recorders, and computers with a Memory Stick slot.

Olympus xD-Picture Card™

xD-PictureCard Compact, reliable, and durable, the Olympus xD-Picture Card is a reusable digital media compatible with most manufacturers' xD-compatible devices. You can use non-xD devices as well, thanks to a number of new adapter technologies that will be available including a CompactFlash™ Adapter, SmartMedia™ USB Reader/Writer, and PCMCIA/PC Card Adapter. The Olympus xD card is the only xD card that supports the panorama function found on most Olympus digital cameras.

Equipped with the most advanced storage technology available, the Olympus xD-Picture Card is about the size of a postage stamp, the xD card measures 0.787 inches long, 0.984 inches wide, and 0.067 inches thick (20 mm by 25 mm by 1.7 mm).
