Recognizing DDR Memory Modules Part-5

Thursday, May 24, 2001 Part-5

Identifying DDR Memory module by DIMM SPD

SPD (Serial Presence Detect) generally refers to the little Eeprom chip at the corner of the DDR DIMM module. This is a small size non-volatile memory that contains the configuration information of the module. See Diagram

The purpose of this SPD is to tell the PC motherboard how to configure the PC system to work with the particular memory module. It includes type of module, latency information, timing characteristics plus a whole bunch of manufacturer specific information.

The SPD information can be electronically read and interpreted with either the CST EZ-DDR-SPD Programmer or simply any of the CST series of DDR DIMM testers.
